Volkswagen's Bratislava plant is terminating 750 people it used to hire through employment agencies due to lower demand for Audi cars. It has transferred several hundred more workers to other positions within the plant. Audi cars are no longer produced in a 3-shift but in a 2-shift operation. The lower demand is said to be unrelated to the US tariffs. Audi's global sales fell 12% last year, mainly due to challenges in the Chinese market.
VW employs 12,500 people in Slovakia. In addition to the Audi Q7 and Q8 models, they also assemble Škoda, Porsche, and VW vehicles. Last year the plant increased sales by 6% to €12.5bn and gross profit by 11% to €355m.
