Volkswagen made 18% fewer cars in Bratislava in 2020
The Bratislava Volkswagen plant posted a 6% drop in turnover to €9.75bn last year and its pre-tax profit fell 13% to €278m. Output was down 18% to 309,000 vehicles, of which 231,000 were SUV models. The drop came amid the pandemic, which led to a 5-week production shutdown. Electric and hybrid models tripled their share to a quarter of overall car output. China accounted for 24% of the output, USA for 22% and Germany for 14%. Thanks to growing demand, the plant is increasing its workforce by 400 from the current 11,500.
Between May 3-16, the plant will stop the production of SUV models due to a chip shortage. The production of small city cars will continue.
