Slovakia will be one of the fastest ageing economies in Europe in the coming 25 years. The share of over-65s in the working-age population (15-64) will rise from the current 26% to 46%, while the EU average will rise from 33% to 49%, the European Commission predicts. An ageing population will slow economic growth and increase spending on pensions and healthcare. Future governments will be forced to respond by cutting pensions and raising the retirement age. (pravda.sk) The number of old-age pensions has risen by 126,000 over the past decade to 1.1m in April, social insurer SP reported. Spending on all types of pensions, not just old-age ones, has increased from €483m to €790m a month over the decade.
