Slovakia spends the most on public sector salaries among the V4 countries, both as a share of public administration spending and as a share of GDP. In both terms, Slovakia spends more than the EU average, notes think-tank Iness. It therefore disagrees with the labor unions' demands for a 10% public sector wage rise from September this year and a further 10% from January 2025. The Finance Ministry has so far rejected these demands due to fiscal constraints.
In 2015, public sector salaries accounted for 8.9% of GDP and 19.5% of public expenditure. Last year it was 11% and 23%. The number of public sector employees has risen by 47,000 or 11% over the past decade.
