Slovakia’s slide in Transparency International’s Corruption Perception Index continues. Last year, it fell 12 places to 59th out of 180 countries, and this year it dropped another two positions. Perceptions of corruption are also worsening amid the current government’s rollback of anti‑corruption measures through legislative changes and shifts within the police, the prosecutor’s office, and the courts. Rankings of neighboring countries (index 0-100, where 100 indicates no corruption):
| 2025 | 2015 |
Austria | 21 (69) | 16 (76) |
Czechia | 39 (59) | 38 (53) |
Poland | 53 (53) | 29 (63) |
Slovakia | 61 (48) | 50 (51) |
Hungary | 84 (40) | 50 (51) |
(transparency.org) Corruption and clientelism are considered a serious problem by 93% of Slovaks, a January Ipsos survey showed, up from 87% last year. Even among Smer voters, the share reaches 80%.
