Slovakia's arms and ammunition exports doubled to €1.2bn last year and jumped a further 63% year-on-year to €104m in January, ŠÚ reported. The initial impetus was the war in Ukraine, and in the coming years Slovakia may benefit from Europe militarily disengaging with the US under Donald Trump. By comparison, Czechia, with twice the population, exported €88m worth of arms in January. Weapons accounted for just 1% of Slovakia's total exports. SNS proposed a special tax on defense companies. Their main lobbyist in Slovakia is Robert Kaliňák, and it remains to be seen whether the tax will be imposed.
