Slovakia remained the world's largest car manufacturer per capita last year, according to OICA data. Last year, our car output fell by 8% to 183 cars per 1,000 inhabitants, but is still much higher than in Czechia (+4% to 134 cars) and Germany (51). Slovakia is therefore among the hardest hit by the U.S. 25% tariff on cars. The U.S. was Slovakia's second-largest car export market last year, though its share dropped to 11%.
Car output is expected to grow this year, driven mainly by the Stellantis plant in Trnava. A new Volvo plant is scheduled to begin production at the end of 2026, raising Slovakia’s annual production to 1.5m vehicles from this year’s 1.1m.
