Slovakia may impose special tax on defense industry

The defense industry's net profit could reach €1bn this year, and a new sectoral tax on the segment could offset next year's revenue shortfall after the financial transaction tax is scrapped, according to a government analysis obtained by daily HN. The sectoral tax could raise €180m if it targeted profits above the 2021-23 average. It is unclear whether the cabinet will introduce the tax; Defense Minister Robert Kaliňák, a friend of CSG owner Michal Strnad, would likely oppose it.

Defense companies' revenue rose 515% in 2021-25, and they posted a net profit of €540m last year.
