Slovakia has long had low public investment, although the need for repairs and modernization is growing, the central bank NBS noted. The problem is a lack of financing and neglected planning and preparation of projects. Slovakia’s level of public investment is roughly on par with the annual renewal requirement, but most CEE countries are investing more—modernizing and improving public services faster. Tax collection in Slovakia is already at a comparable level to elsewhere in CEE. However, the country allocates a higher share to social and health spending than its neighbors, with less spent on education and investment.
