Slovakia benefits from EU membership to the tune of 4% of GDP annually
Access to the EU single market increases Slovakia's GDP by more than 15%, a central bank NBS study estimates. Most of the benefits of EU membership thus stem from the opportunity to trade in the single market. In addition, Slovakia has received €24bn in net payments from the EU since joining in 2004 (2022 prices). The economic benefits of these transfers have been significantly higher, as they have financed investment. Membership in the union reduces the cost of servicing public debt by €700m per year. The annual contribution of Slovakia's EU membership is thus at the level of 4% of GDP.
