South Korea’s Samsung confirmed it will close its TV‑manufacturing plant in Galanta and lay off all 750 employees by the end of June 2026. It said the decision was driven by “changes in the global market,” and not by Slovakia’s business environment or government measures. According to labor unions, Samsung is moving part of its production to Vietnam, Egypt, and Hungary. The plant could not compete with Hungary due to higher wages, taxes, and payroll levies. Samsung will retain its 700-strong logistics center in Gáň.
The Galanta plant, opened in 2002, has faced closure several times. In 2018, Samsung closed its Voderady factory, cutting 900 jobs. The Galanta plant reported a €62m net profit in 2024 on €1.7bn in sales.
Between 2,500 and 3,000 supplier jobs are at risk, and companies such as Jasplastik and Samil Balenie may have to shut down.
