Private media with higher ratings for top sporting events

The Ice Hockey World Cup and the European Football Championship moved from the public broadcaster STVR to private broadcasters Joj and Markíza, respectively, this year. Both events used to be among the most watched programs of the year in STVR, but the private broadcasters managed to increase ratings further. While STVR had just one hockey match with over a million viewers in 2022, Joj had as many as seven this year. The second half of Sunday's Slovakia-England football match had a 1.3m audience on Markíza, making its prime-time market share (63%) the highest since January 2015. The rest of Slovakia's matches were also the most watched programs this year.
