The price of emission allowances paid by large polluters has fallen by 25% to €75 per ton since February. Analysts say this is only a temporary drop as the EU gradually reduces the volume of free permits for industry. The price has risen 3-fold in the last three years. Cheaper emissions boost industry's competitiveness but weaken the incentive to invest in decarbonization. EU CO2 emissions were 5% lower annually in the second quarter, mainly due to the economic slowdown, Eurostat reported.
