Labor unions point out that night work is a much bigger problem in Slovakia than working on Sundays. Eurostat data show that 11% of Slovak employees work on Sundays, on par with the EU average. Poland (5%) has the lowest share. The share in Austria, where shops are closed on Sundays, is 14%. While on average 4% of employees in the EU work at night, in Slovakia the figure is as high as 11%. Before the pandemic, the Slovak share was even 15%. This reflects the fact that Slovakia is one of the most industrialized countries in the Union. However, similarly industrial countries such as Czechia, Germany and Slovenia have roughly half the share of night work. Parliament has recently increased the night work bonus to 40% of the minimum wage.
