New coalition rejects reviews of its investment plans
The government approved a directive on strategic investments this week under which large state projects will no longer be reviewed by the Value for Money Unit at the Finance Ministry. The projects will be evaluated by analytical units under the ministries submitting them. This increases the risk of ill-conceived projects implemented for political/corruption rather than economic reasons. After taking office, Defense Minister Robert Kaliňák abolished the analytical unit at his ministry and his investment plans will not be assessed by analysts at all. The government wants to step up investment activity and is planning major projects in the health, transport and energy sectors.
