Largest players in Slovak healthcare

Penta (Haščák family and Marek Dospiva) is the biggest private player in the healthcare sector. It owns 17 hospitals, 13 ProCare polyclinics, 400 Dr.Max pharmacies and health insurer Dôvera. Last year it acquired Sportclinic Bratislava, part of the Apotheke pharmacy chain, and opened a new hospital, Bory. Agel (Tomáš Chrenek) owns two polyclinics and 17 hospitals, 14 pharmacies, a health service and a network of laboratories. Last year it acquired five hospitals in central Slovakia from Penta. Phoenix ZZ, a drug wholesaler, also controls pharmacy chain Benu, employs 500 people and posted sales of €800m last year. Its smaller competitors are Unipharma (Milan Vrúbel) and Med-Art (Ján Holec and Hilda Némethová). Switzerland's Unilabs is the leader in the diagnostics segment. Saneca and HBM Pharma make medicines in Slovakia.
