Kaufland (Germany’s Schwarz Group) plans to invest €300m in Slovakia over the next five years, three-quarters of it in new stores. It will increase its store count from 88 to 90 this year, with a long-term target of 120–130. The company has revenue of almost €2bn and a net profit margin of 3.3%. CEO Michal Dendeš warned that a special tax on retail chains, which the ruling coalition is considering, could derail these plans.
