Slovakia's population will fall by 37,000 by 2030 and by a further 147,000 in the next decade, the European Commission predicts. The decline will continue and by 2070 Slovakia will have 4.8m inhabitants, 660,000 fewer than today. Slovakia's birthrate is 1.6 children per woman, below the reproduction rate (2.1), and the inflow of migrants is relatively weak. The share of people of working age will fall from 66% to 57% of the population by 2070, and the share of people of retirement age will rise from 18% to 30%. This will put pressure on the pension and healthcare systems, as well as on public finances.
