Government to install Russian speed cameras

New stationary speed cameras purchased by the Interior Ministry for Slovak roads are actually Russian-made and merely marketed as a European product, daily N reports. The devices are Cordon systems from Russian company Simicon. The Interior Ministry denies the Russian origin, considers the risk of data leaks to be zero, and continues installing the cameras on roads. Russian-made cameras would pose a major security risk, as Russia could gain access to information on the movement of people or goods. The cameras are supplied by IT firm Soitron (Ondrej Smolár), under a €22m contract that also includes an automatic license plate recognition system and a video recording module.
