When collecting debts, bailiffs must leave debtors with income at least 140% of the subsistence minimum (€305), up from the previous 100%, according to legislation approved by the government on Wednesday. It hopes the change will motivate people to seek formal employment. Bailiffs are concerned the change will lead to irresponsible behavior of debtors. They also point out that since the overall time of debt repayment will extend, costs for debtors will be higher. Some 33,000 pensioners who face forfeiture will benefit from the change, too.
