Finance Ministry wants Slovnaft to pay tax on excess profits

The Finance Ministry is negotiating with the Slovnaft crude oil refinery to pay the tax on excess profits from Russian oil for 2023. The refinery claims that it no longer meets the conditions to pay the tax, from which the state expected €354m for 2023 and another €228m for this year. Slovnaft explains that, under EU norms, the tax only applies to companies that generate at least 75% of their turnover in the oil, gas, coal and refinery sectors. Slovnaft, however, derives more than 25% of its turnover from plastics production and fuel retailing. Last year, it reported a €540m net profit on €5.9bn sales.
