The Finance Ministry is considering a new tax on bank transfers as a key part of next year's fiscal consolidation, sources told the N daily. The government declined to comment. Bank transfers, such as paying salaries and bills, card payments, and ATM withdrawals, would be taxed. Hungary has a similar tax (0.45-0.9%) and, with its parameters, Slovakia could collect €550m annually. The government wants to burden mainly companies; the first €50 of a bank transfer would not be taxed. The tax on financial transactions is quite common in the world, but it mostly applies to security transactions and not to ordinary bank transfers of citizens or companies.

The government wants to cut the public finance deficit next year by stopping energy subsidies (€800m), adding a new tax on sweetened soft drinks, and increasing the cigarette tax (€100m).
