Farmers switching to sunflower following the Russian invasion
Following the Russian invasion, Slovak farmers replaced some corn fields with sunflower, as its supply has been restricted the most. Ukraine used to account for 47% of global sunflower oil exports. Unlike cereals, oilseeds do not need to be dried, saving farmers on energy costs. They have postponed plans to increase fruit and vegetable production, which would massively increase their added value, but is more complicated. Investments in greenhouses and irrigation that vegetables and fruits require were put on hold following the rise in building materials prices.
