The EU drafted its 19th package of sanctions against Russia, which, among other measures, brings forward the ban on Russian gas imports by one year to January 2027. The move aims to weaken Russia’s war budget and meet US demands to supply LNG to Europe. The deadline for ending oil imports remains January 2028, with only Hungary and Slovakia still purchasing Russian crude. In 2024, Russia supplied 19% of the EU’s gas, down from 45% before the war. The EU is preparing measures that could block Russian crude oil imports through the Druzhba pipeline for Hungary and Slovakia, sources told Bloomberg. Bratislava will not be able to veto the as-yet-unspecified trade measures.
