Cash no longer the king
The value of card and smartphone payments exceeded the value of cash payments for the first time last year, NBS data show. The pandemic closed stores and increased interest in online shopping. In the summer, when shops and restaurants were open, people still paid more in cash. In the last quarter of last year, mobile phones accounted for 8% of non-cash payments (4.5% in 4Q19). Online stores had a 12% share in card payments in 4Q20.
