3,000 comments to building permit reform
Deputy PM Štefan Holý (Sme rodina) received 3,000 comments in the repeated comments process to his building permit reform that ended on Wednesday. His draft bills on construction and zoning were condemned by municipalities, activists and other ministries. The reform aims to abolish the current zoning permits, replacing them with quality zoning plans. Licensed project designers, paid by developers, will assume great powers in permitting new construction. The issuance of building permits will move from municipalities to the state. Municipalities criticized the unrealistically short deadlines for making decisions. They are concerned project designers will have too big a sway over permitting new construction. The designers, in turn, are concerned about assuming responsibility. Activists noted an expensive IT system that should be run by a private company. Holý will now discuss the comments and is ready to make changes. The ruling coalition may withdraw the reform altogether.
