Transport Minister Andrej Doležal (Sme rodina) is considering the long-term lease of the M.R. Štefánik Airport in Bratislava to a strategic partner. Robert Fico aborted the airport’s privatization in 2006 and since then, all governments have considered leasing it. The airport is highly indebted and needs a €300m investment into runways.
The airport is dealing with a revenue outage by leasing its runways to airlines to park 72 planes. It is getting €1,500 per plane monthly, and local service firms are benefiting too. Europe’s air traffic won’t return to normal for several more months.
