Pellegrini wants to push Fico out

“I feel the time has come for a major change in the party,” wrote ex-PM Peter Pellegrini in an op-ed for the HN daily. Although he led the Smer party to a solid election result and is among Slovakia’s most popular politicians, Robert Fico remains party leader and shows no signs of letting Pellegrini take over. Pellegrini warns that if he is not elected leader, he might leave and set up his own party. Smer had planned a congress for December to elect leaders but now it is possible it will be held earlier. Pellegrini wants the change as soon as possible, as the new unstable coalition might lead to an early election.
