Highway toll is a cash cow for SkyToll

The highway toll system is uneconomical for the state, reckons the state spending watchdog NKÚ after auditing it. Of the total toll revenue of €1.58bn in 2010-18, the state only received 45% and its operator, SkyToll, 48%. SkyToll, then controlled by Milan Fiľo and J&T, won the contract during the first Robert Fico government despite its bid being €333m higher compared to the lowest bid. The state will fully repay the system but in 2022, when SkyToll’s contract expires, it won’t own the system. SkyToll is among Slovakia’s most profitable companies and the state lacks money for new highways.

The national highway firm NDS says it is preparing a tender for a new toll operator.
