Expensive overdrafts and credit cards
Slovakia’s interest rates on mortgages are among the lowest in the euro zone, but the rates on overdrafts and credit cards are among the highest. They have been stable in recent years, and banks have no plans to cut them. The Slovak overdraft rates are the 4th-highest in the euro zone, four points above the euro area average; the credit rates are the highest, 5.5 points above average. While SLSP charges 19.9% for an overdraft, Czech Česká spořitelna charges 18.9% and Austrian Sparkasse 12.75% (all are part of Erste Group of Austria). The situation is similar in UniCredit Bank.
