The European Commission (EC) okayed the €125m investment assistance the Slovak government has provided to the new Jaguar Land Rover car plant in Nitra. The EC reckons the assistance was needed for JLR to prefer Slovakia to Mexico. Some say Slovakia competed with Poland for the investment. The investment will help the disadvantaged region without unduly distorting competition. The €1.4bn investment will create 2,800 jobs. The government spent €500m in total, with the remainder building the local industrial park. The EC agreed with the government that the park will not only benefit Jaguar Land Rover, but also all other companies located there.
JLR will launch production in several weeks. It employs 1,400 now.
