The coalition party SNS wants to impose a new tax on retailers, totaling 2% of their sales, in 2019, say sources of the N daily. Initially, it pushed for a 6% tax. If only large retailers paid the tax, the intake would come to €160-180m annually. The Agriculture Ministry wants to use the money to create a marketing fund to support local food producers. It also plans to set up a fund insuring farmers against bad weather. It seems likely retailers will pass the new tax on to shoppers.
