HBP mine in the black
Mine Hornonitrianske bane Prievidza posted a €2.2m net profit last year, despite a 3% drop in sales to €105.8m. It mined 1.7m tons of low-quality brown coal, on par with 2016, and sold almost all of it to the nearby Nováky power plant. Back in 2011 it mined 2.3m tons and this year, it expects mining at just 1.4m tons. Last year, it closed its Cigeľ mine and plans to offset this by opening new mining slots. A local spa and the city of Prievidza city are protesting the plans. The state is providing €95m annual subsidy for the mining, which provides 3,200 jobs.
