U.S. Steel is not selling its Košice steel mill

U.S. Steel is not selling its Košice steel mill, said PM Peter Pellegrini (Smer) after meeting the mill’s management on Thursday. Media have been speculating that the HeSteel Group of China is buying the Košice mill. Pellegrini, though, says that “there is no specific offer on the table.” The memorandum the government signed with the American owner in 2013 expired recently, and the government is not planning to sign a new one. Pellegrini praised the steel mill for investing €250m into new technologies over the past three years. Media say the steel mill needs to invest €1-2bn to stay competitive.
