Waste disposal becoming more expensive
Municipalities will be required by law as of January 1 to treat waste before throwing it into landfills. They will have to reduce its volume and dangerous properties as well as to improve recyclability. Up to 85% of municipalities do not yet have the technology to meet this obligation, although the majority is already planning to. The construction is hindered by activists and the slow permit process. Municipalities warn the new obligation may double their waste management costs. The Environment Ministry says it would not yet fine municipalities that do not fulfill the new obligation.
