U.S. Steel Košice €2bn decarbonization plan
Steel mill U.S. Steel Košice has prepared a decarbonization plan, says its vice-president Miroslav Kiraľvarga. It is able to implement it in 36 months at a cost of €2bn. The result should be a 70% reduction in emissions with unchanged production volume. The mill will apply for state subsidies for the project that will also result in a reduction of employment. The plan may only be given the go-ahead once ownership changes are clarified; Japanese Nippon Steel has submitted a bid to buy the whole corporation, including the Košice mill, but the US government is likely to block the deal.
