Sulík says EU’s climate goals are nonsense
“This is nonsense,“ was Economy Minister Richard Sulík’s (SaS) comment on the EU’s target to cut greenhouse emissions by 55% compared to the 1990 level by 2030. He added, though, that companies should adapt rather than fight the EU’s plans. Even Slovakia will not avoid the significant and costly decarbonization of industry, transport and energy. Sulík considers a 35% cut in emissions to be appropriate and believes that Brussels will reconsider its target when it realizes all the implications. The ambitious target has already driven up the price of emission permits and energy, leading the Slovalco aluminum smelter to postpone its investment in new furnaces. Ferroalloy producer OFZ is also considering its options.
