Sulík blocked sale of SSE to Hungarians
Economy Minister Richard Sulík (SaS) is ready to block the sale of a 49% stake in energy distributor SSE to MVM, a Hungarian state-owned firm. The state owns 51% and the Czech EPH (Daniel Křetínský and Patrik Tkáč) is selling its 49% stake. Sulík does not see the point of having another state acquire a stake in SSE. He also sees political risks, as the Hungarian government had planned to buy Slovak land and other real estate for nationalist reasons and is subsidizing the Hungarian media and churches in Slovakia. Sulík would not block the sale to other private investors and does not plan to buy the stake for the Slovak state.
EPH is respecting Sulík’s decision. It acquired the stake in 2013 for €400m and MVM is now offering €1.25bn.
