NDS, the national highway company, has still not terminated its contract with Paywell (Petr Sucharda) on processing highway toll payments. Back in 2014, the then Smer-led government allowed Paywell to keep 6.2% of the payments, although banks usually charge 1% and the Value For Money unit proposes 1.5-2%. The contract can be canceled anytime, with six months’ notice. The current ruling parties, then in opposition, tried to recall the then Transport Minister Ján Počiatek in parliament over the contract, but now have not taken any action in nine months. Transport Minister Andrej Doležal (Sme rodina) indicated he wants to keep Paywell until a new toll system is launched in 2023 at the earliest. Paywell is wisely reporting low profits and its sales stood at €12.6m in 2019.
