The Environment Ministry signed a memorandum with the mayors of 17 municipalities, including Málinec and Látky, on cooperation in building a €1.8bn pumped storage hydroelectric power plant in Málinec. The aim was to stabilize the electricity grid. Under the memorandum, the villages would share €2.5m annually from the plant’s operation. The government also promised infrastructure projects such as sewage systems and cycle paths. Activists protest against the project, fearing its impact on drinking water.
