Hospitality segment is growing again after the pandemic downturn, says Plzenský Prazdroj
The Slovak hospitality segment is growing again after the pandemic downturn, with more new establishments opening than older ones closing down, said Martin Grygařík, head of Plzenský Prazdroj Slovensko. The company overtook Heineken in beer sales in Slovakia last year and has retained the top spot this year. Last year, Slovak beer consumption rose 9% to 64 liters per person, mainly thanks to warm weather and booming tourism. Further growth is expected this year. Its brewery in Veľký Šariš produces 60% of the beers sold in Slovakia, while 40% are imported from Czechia, mainly Pilsner Urquell and Radegast. The Slovak brands Šariš and Smädný mních account for a quarter of sales and radlers for 14%. It employs 600. A €4.6m investment in the brewery's brewhouse, which will increase capacity by 250,000 hl a year to 1.5m hl, will kick off in the autumn. It invested €7m in pubs and restaurants last year and a similar amount this year.
