The government is seeking ways to use the electricity generated at the state-owned Gabčíkovo hydro power plant to support companies, sources tell HN. The state-owned Vodohospodárska výstavba, which owns the plant, reported a net profit of €354m in 2022-23 thanks to exceptionally high power prices, almost all of which were paid into the state budget. The support might take the form of long-term contracts to allow energy-intensive firms to lock in the price and quantity of electricity. Gabčíkovo currently sells most of its output on the wholesale market. The contracts would be assessed by the EU to determine whether they constitute illegal state aid. Gabčíkovo produced 2 TWh of the total Slovak power output of 27 TWh last year.
Slovenské elektrárne are helping households, supplying power at discounted prices since 2023.
