Power generator Slovenské elektrárne (SE) was in very poor financial shape even before the recent approval of changes to energy laws, said Economy Minister Karel Hirman. He denies that potential SE bankruptcy and halting of completion of the 4th Mochovce nuclear power plant bloc may result from the legislation that gives the government the right to set to whom and for what price SE sells electricity. He emphasizes the government would only use the new power in a crisis situation. SE’s financial woes stem from the overpriced and delayed Mochovce completion. Also, SE sold more electricity for this year than it is able to produce and must buy power for its clients at the current extreme spot prices.
