In a surprising move, courts did not stop a corruption case of NBS governor Peter Kažimír, despite his request for dismissal due to the statute of limitations. No ruling was issued on Friday, but the public has learned the details of the case. Kažimír allegedly paid a €48,000 bribe in 2017-18 to the then president of the tax authority FS, František Imrecze, to speed up the payment of €3.2m in VAT refunds to Ladislav Rehák's companies. Imrecze admitted accepting the bribe. Just before the bribe was paid, Kažimír withdrew money from an ATM. At about the same time, he bought a villa in Bratislava's Slavín district from Rehák for a suspiciously low sum. He also provided an unnamed company a €1m loan, which he did not disclose in his asset declaration, although he was required by law to do so. Kažimír denies any wrongdoing.
