Bukóza on the verge of bankruptcy

Vranov nad Topľou-based pulp mill Bukóza (Ján Ďurian) did not pay wages for March, its labor union said. The union blames the former government, under which the state-owned forestry firm Lesy SR terminated a long-term contract and cut wood supplies by 50%. Bukóza has only produced for three weeks since December 2023 due to a shortage of timber and banks are refusing to finance it. The company is on the verge of bankruptcy and 700 jobs are on the line.Bukóza has been in trouble for a long time. Ďurian tried to sell it to the Arca group in 2020, but the sale fell through amid Arca's woes. Last year it did not buy the emission allowances needed for production and was recently fined €2m as a result.
