Slovak meat market
Meat processor Mecom (Penta) kept its position as leader on the Slovak meat market last year, with €145m sales. Last year, it posted a €0.2m net profit, but since Penta’s acquisition in 2008 it has lost €142.3m. It exports 60% of output. Market No.2 Tauris (Milan Fiľo) had €101.5m sales last year and since 2013, it has posted a meager €5.2m net profit. Hyza (Andrej Babiš) is the largest poultry processor, with last year’s sales of €94m. Its net profits have been just under €2m in recent years. Meat processor Istermeat (Oszkár Világi) improved its sales 33% to €39.6m last year, but still suffered a small loss. Local firms keep complaining of low state subsidies, cheap imports, retailers’ price pressures, and African swine fever.
