Lower VAT on select foodstuffs

Parliament approved cutting VAT from 20% to 10% for select foodstuffs. Their list has no logic in it; it includes some dairy products, honey, fresh rolls weighing 40-50 g, fresh juices, apples and pears and some vegetables (not carrots). SNS leader Andrej Danko explained that the cut is meant to help hotel restaurants and includes items found in hotel breakfasts. Another factor was fiscal constraints, as the Finance Ministry capped the cut’s impact at €65m annually.

Meat, milk, butter, and bread have been subject to 10% VAT since January 2016.
