U.S. Steel will switch to a 5-day work week in September

The Košice-based steel mill U.S. Steel announced that it will switch to a 5-day work week in September. In May, and then in July-August, it moved to four days a week, due to low demand stemming from high steel imports from Asia. The management wanted to keep the 4-day week in September but labor unions disagreed. The company still uses just two of its three blast furnaces after it closed the remaining one in June.

About 700 workers have already taken up the offer to leave voluntarily with generous severance pay. The offer is part of a plan to reduce the workforce from 12,000 by 2,500 by the end of 2021.
