Brewery Plzeňský Prazdroj Slovensko had a record year
Brewery Plzeňský Prazdroj Slovensko, with brands Šariš, Smädný Mních, Veľkopopovický Kozel, Gambrinus and Pilsner Urquell and owned by Asahi of Japan, increased its net profit by half to €11.1m and sales 30% to €131.5m last year. These are all-time highs. After 2008, annual sales fell to €90m and the brewery lost €33m. Last year, beer sales were up 6% to 1.6m hl. Czech brands account for 70% of that, despite being pricier (most of them are made in Slovakia).
The Slovak market leader Heineken has a different strategy—Slovak brands Zlatý Bažant, Corgoň, Martiner, Gemer and Kelt account for 90% of its Slovak sales.
