Weak VAT collection improvement

The Smer party deems the improvement in value added tax collection to be its major achievement in public finances. In VAT collection, though, Slovakia has not gotten closer to the EU average in recent years and neighboring countries have managed to improve VAT collection even more than Slovakia, according to European Commission data. Slovakia still loses almost €2bn annually in VAT collection, and its VAT gap is twice as high as the EU average, and almost twice as high as in Czechia and Hungary, which are comparable countries.
